The Catalyst.

The foundation came about from Aminata’s near death experience while giving birth to her daughter Sarafina in 2012, who suffered from shoulder dystocia at the time.

During her experience in Australia, Aminata had access to high-quality healthcare and this has compelled her to seek improvements for women in her country of birth, Sierra Leone.

The lifetime risk of dying while having a baby in Sierra Leone is 1 in 17. That is about 500 times more dangerous than having a baby in Australia where the same figure is 1 in 8,700. – The county been ranked as one of the most dangerous places in the world to give birth.

With a demand of 3500 midwives, there is a critical shortage with fewer than 1000 midwives in a country of a population of more than 7.8 million. Almost 3,000 women and 20,000 children die annually from preventable health-related conditions, a situation that has been further compounded by the spread of the Ebola virus.

In Sierra Leone, Aminata witnesses women bleeding to death during childbirth in front of doctors because they didn’t have enough money to pay.

There is a universal need for maternal healthcare, it is both essential and critical to women of Sierra Leone.

Foundation Mission.

“Make birth safe NOW. Make birth safe in the FUTURE.”

None of us would be here if ‘Motherhood marked an end, not A BEGINNING‘.

My fellow Australians, please join me and the Aminata Maternal Foundation to END preventable maternal and infant mortality in Sierra Leone. I truly believe that everything about our collective humanity is making the impossible possible.

Motherhood has changed me completely and truly. I want to fight the good fight for mothers, babies, women and refugees. But we can only win this fight if we all work together.
